Itihaas

Temple History

At 3,100m on the Bhagirathi, the Gangotri temple was built by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century. King Bhagirath's tapasya here brought Ganga down to earth.

Belief · Manyata

A dip in Bhagirathi at Gangotri liberates ancestors from the cycle of rebirth.

Vastu & Shilpa

Architecture

A compact stone garbhagriha housing the devi's shila, surrounded by open courtyards for parikrama. The stonework at Gangotri has been maintained across generations by the temple trust, honouring both the vastu tradition and the region's craftsmanship.

Isht Devta

The Deity — Maa Ganga

Maa Ganga is worshipped here as the presiding form of the divine. Devotees offer prayers, flowers, and sacred chants; the daily aarti cycles anchor the temple's rhythm from Brahma Muhurta at dawn to the Shayan aarti at night.
