Temple History

Founded by Guru Ram Das in 1577 and completed by Guru Arjan Dev in 1604, the Harmandir Sahib stands in the middle of Amrit Sarovar. The gold leaf gilding was done by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Guru Ram Das Sahib founded Amritsar and excavated the Amrit Sarovar in 1577; Guru Arjan Dev Ji laid the foundation of Sri Harmandir Sahib through Sufi saint Hazrat Mian Mir on 28 December 1588 and completed it in 1604, simultaneously installing the first compilation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib on 16 August 1604. Maharaja Ranjit Singh covered the upper floors with 750 kg of gold leaf in 1830. The Akal Takht across the parikrama is the seat of temporal authority of the Sikh Panth, established by Guru Hargobind Sahib in 1606. The langar at Sri Harmandir Sahib serves free meals to 50,000–1,00,000 people daily — believed to be the largest community kitchen on earth.

Architecture

A gilded darbar sahib flanked by white marble parikrama, with the sarovar reflecting the sanctum's dome. The stonework at Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) has been maintained across generations by the temple trust, honouring both the vastu tradition and the region's craftsmanship.

Isht Devta

The Deity — Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is worshipped here as the presiding form of the divine. Devotees offer prayers, flowers, and sacred chants; the daily aarti cycles anchor the temple's rhythm from Brahma Muhurta at dawn to the Shayan aarti at night.
