Temple History
On the western bank of the Ganga in Kashi — the eternal city — the present sanctum was built by Ahilyabai Holkar in 1780. The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor has reconnected the temple with the holy Manikarnika Ghat. Kashi is mentioned in the Rigveda, Skanda Purana, Linga Purana, Shiva Purana and Matsya Purana. The original temple was demolished by Qutb-ud-din Aibak in 1194, rebuilt, then razed by Aurangzeb in 1669 who built the Gyanvapi mosque on the site. Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore built the present temple immediately south of the original location in 1780; Maharaja Ranjit Singh donated 1000 kg of gold for the spires in 1835. The 339-crore Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor, inaugurated by PM Modi on 13 December 2021, restored a 5-lakh-sqft sacred precinct connecting the temple directly to the Ganga at Lalita Ghat.

“It is said that liberation (moksha) is granted to whoever takes their last breath in Kashi.”
Vastu & Shilpa
Architecture
Nagara-style shikhara with a raised sanctum, a pillared mandapa, and stone carvings depicting Shiva's cosmic dance. The stonework at Kashi Vishwanath has been maintained across generations by the temple trust, honouring both the vastu tradition and the region's craftsmanship.
Isht Devta
The Deity — Lord Shiva (Vishweshwar)
Lord Shiva (Vishweshwar) is worshipped here as the presiding form of the divine. Devotees offer prayers, flowers, and sacred chants; the daily aarti cycles anchor the temple's rhythm from Brahma Muhurta at dawn to the Shayan aarti at night.
