Temple History
Set at 3,583m in the Garhwal Himalayas, Kedarnath was established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century on a spot revered by the Pandavas. The temple stands on a stone platform that survived the 2013 floods miraculously intact. The temple is one of the Panch Kedar and stands at 3,583 m on the Mandakini, flanked by the Kedarnath, Kedar Dome and Bharatekuntha peaks. The gigantic interlocked stone walls, with no mortar, are credited to the Pandavas; the present shrine was re-established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, who attained samadhi behind the temple at age 32. During the June 2013 flash floods, a single boulder — venerated as Bhim Shila — diverted the torrent around the sanctum, leaving the temple miraculously unharmed while everything around it was destroyed.
Belief · Manyata
“The Pandavas sought Lord Shiva here to absolve the sin of killing kin in Kurukshetra; the Lord appeared as a bull and dived into the earth, leaving his hump at Kedar.”
Vastu & Shilpa
Architecture
Nagara-style shikhara with a raised sanctum, a pillared mandapa, and stone carvings depicting Shiva's cosmic dance. The stonework at Kedarnath has been maintained across generations by the temple trust, honouring both the vastu tradition and the region's craftsmanship.
Isht Devta
The Deity — Lord Shiva (Kedar)
Lord Shiva (Kedar) is worshipped here as the presiding form of the divine. Devotees offer prayers, flowers, and sacred chants; the daily aarti cycles anchor the temple's rhythm from Brahma Muhurta at dawn to the Shayan aarti at night.
